Easton Community Centre is fossil fuel free – Owen Square Energy Centre
The Owen Square Energy project began in 2014 as an idea to convert Easton Community Centre to using renewable ground-source heat.
The project now deploys solar panels on the roof of the centre and a hybrid air/ground Energy Centre with seasonal storage to supply renewable heat and power to the community centre and Raised in Easton nursery.
The aim is to eventually supply low-carbon heat and power to homes and businesses in Easton.
WHAT IS IT?
What is a hybrid air-ground source heat Energy Centre?
The Owen Square Energy Centre extracts heat from surrounding air as well as 2 kilometres of pipework under Owen Square park and upgrades it to temperatures sufficient to be piped through radiators at the community centre.
What is a microgrid?
A microgrid is a private electricity network connecting several buildings with solar panels and used to reduce the cost of electricity for those buildings.
What is seasonal storage?
Seasonal thermal storage is the process of storing summer heat underground for use in winter.
If you’re interested in finding out more we’ll be holding tours of the energy centre in 2021, as part of our Climate Action Fund project, contact emily@upourstreet.org.uk
