Refugee Week (16 to 22 June) is an important time for reflection, celebration and connection. This year’s theme, Community as a Superpower, could not feel more fitting for us at Eastside Community Trust. For our team and neighbours across East Bristol, building a welcoming and inclusive community is not just something we do for one week each year, it is the heart of everything we do.
At Eastside, we know that community is not just a place, it is a force and feeling that brings people together and strengthens everyone involved. In East Bristol, we are proud to be home to people from many backgrounds, cultures and countries. Refugee Week is a powerful reminder of the contributions that refugees and people seeking asylum make to our neighbourhoods and of the strength that comes from standing together.
Our Chief Executive Stacy Yellend puts it perfectly:
“At Eastside, we see the real power of community every day. Whether it is people coming together to share food, to learn or simply to talk – these everyday acts of connection are what create a safe and welcoming place for all. We are proud to support refugees and new arrivals not just during Refugee Week, but all year round.”
Throughout the year, Eastside supports initiatives that help new arrivals to feel at home. From English language conversation groups, and housing advice sessions, to community meals and inclusive events at Easton Community Centre and Felix Road Adventure Playground, we aim to be a first friendly face and a lasting support. We work closely with partners to make sure East Bristol remains a place of possibility and sanctuary.
This year’s Bristol Refugee Festival promises a citywide celebration with the same spirit of welcome and solidarity. Events will take place across Bristol, showcasing music, food, stories and cultures from around the world. As ever, we are thrilled to play our part by supporting local events that connect people and celebrate the richness of our diverse communities.
Refugee Week might last seven days and Bristol Refugee Festival might last two weeks, but at Eastside Community Trust the work of welcome is ongoing and all year round. Together, we keep building a community where everyone belongs, and that is a true superpower.
