We are Connecting Eastside

Do you love parties, picnics, popcorn and play?

At Eastside we firmly believe that coming together with our neighbours in real life makes us all happier and healthier and our neighbourhood more welcoming and inclusive. To support this aim, we host an annual programme of family, cultural and creative events open to all local people. Over the next five years we want to see more local people connecting with each other, their neighbourhood and us here at Eastside.

We will publish an annual event programme that marks the cultural highlights of our area, for example Eid, Christmas and Diwali, as well as invite you to organise your own events alongside us. We have a particular focus on women and girls and families feeling safe and welcome in the neighbourhood. We will continue our monthly film club after a successful pilot run and develop our Fun Palaces offer where residents can showcase and share their skills and talents. We plan to hold community meals, workshops, street parties, nature trips and more and would love to hear your ideas and for local people to get involved.

It can feel easy to get overwhelmed by the new today with suffering and hate filling our screens. At Eastside we offer an alternative to the division and fear fuelled by social media and those who wish to cause unrest between us. Come and say hello, get involved and share some joy and friendship with those who live near you.

“Having community spaces is very important, especially at times like this when people are made to feel not welcome in their own neighbourhood. It’s very important that they have a space they can come, where they are welcome, where they feel safe. Where also their cultural differences are welcomed and respected and celebrated. For a lot of residents that come here, the community centre feels like home.” Abiir Shirdoon, Eastside’s Community Connector
